Course Description:
It is a common myth that the threat of workplace violence does not manifest itself in a troubled employee until it is too late. Yet almost all threatening workers exhibit telltale signs that are often overlooked or misinterpreted by managers and supervisors.
Led by an attorney who is a member of the national Association of Threat Assessment Professionals, this course is a multi-disciplinary examination of managing threats in the workplace. Going beyond basic warning signs and risk factors, we will examine legal and practical considerations, including balancing recent disability law developments in the context of dealing with a potentially threatening individual, as well as security considerations and the discipline or termination of a dangerous employee.

Learning Points and Questions To Be Answered:
•    Learn the practical steps necessary for your organization to create and train a workplace violence prevention team
•    Identify fundamental warning signs and risk factors concerning a potential perpetrator of workplace violence
•    Learn the cognitive, behavioral and environmental factors that help in understanding and assessing risk levels
•    Understand the interplay between disability law, reasonable accommodation, and practical intervention with an employee of concern
•    Examine the stabilization and control techniques that management should use to deal with an employee who is acting out his or her anger
•    Review the legal and practical steps to take before terminating an employee who threatens violence

Glen E. Kraemer
Glen E. Kraemer, one of the founding partners of Curiale, Hirschfeld, Kraemer, LLP and manages the Los Angeles office employment law practice. He focuses exclusively on the representation of employers concerning discrimination and harassment claims, and personnel law compliance issues involving disability accommodations, wage/hour concerns, protected leaves, and corrective counseling, discipline and termination practices. In addition to representing a broad spectrum of employers in retail, manufacturing, entertainment and service/hospitality industries, for over twenty years he has assisted colleges and universities in managing student affairs issues ranging from the creation of investigation protocols and hearing and grievance procedures to the defense of student-initiated litigation. Glen has devoted significant time and energy to three particular interests—the creation and delivery of internal “best practices” management training programs, including sexual harassment prevention seminars in compliance with state law requirements, workplace violence prevention and threat management, and neutral investigations for both public and private sector employers of internal discrimination, harassment and wrongful discipline complaints.
